In the first three months of Concord's pay-as-you-throw program, overall trash volume has dwindled, recycling rates have soared and the city has saved itself a significant chunk of change, according to figures released yesterday.
Comparing quarterly figures from July to September of 2008 with the same period this year, the preliminary report shows Concord's solid waste volume is down nearly 50 percent - to 2,118 tons from 4,151 tons.
Recycling is up about 75 percent to 888 tons collected in 2009 from 50

No one signed up Friday seeking a seat on the city council, but the school board finally has enough candidates to fill four open positions.
Current school board member Clint Cogswell will run for a three-year term, while Tim Croteau will seek a one-year term.
Croteau has taught in the district before and more recently worked as a principal in the Winnisquam Regional School District, said the school board's clerk, Roger Phillips.

Three more people filed for city council seats yesterday - two current councilors and a newcomer.
In Ward 3, Juston Kay will challenge Councilor Jan McClure, who is running for re-election.
He joins Amanda Grady in Ward 4 and Jim Baer for an at-large seat as one of three new candidates for the council.

Fred Keach and Jan McClure have added their names to the list of city councilors running for re-election.
Midway through the filing period, only Jim Baer and Amanda Grady have emerged as new candidates for city council seats.
No one has signed up to challenge Mayor Jim Bouley, who is running for re-election.
